It is believed that the English sallet, commonly called the salade, was first designed and crafted in Burgundy or France during the 15th century. They took different shapes at the back of the neck; some fitted close to the head while others extended to form a tail, offering protection from enemies approaching from behind. Some were also worn with a bevor, a padded gorget that protected the jaw of the wearer. Although it is considered German armor, it ultimately replaced the bascinet throughout most of Northern Europe and Hungary.

Our German Gothic Salade with Bevor would have been suitable for knights and men-at-arms on foot or mounted combat. Thoughtfully crafted by Windlass Steelcrafts® to replicate 1480 models, our salade is fully wearable and perfect for reenactment. Forged from 18-gauge steel, it features a fully lined bevor and a movable visor.
