It is easy to see why the Medieval Flail would have been one of the most feared weapons in battle. At least if your opponent had a sword or dagger, there was some predictability of movement so you could defend yourself. Defense was rarely possible against a flail, especially since they could wrap around your shield and deliver a nasty blow.
